The last two blogs explore the thinking process behind examination preparation. Below are some practical suggestions for preparing for examinations.
- Be clear about the grade you to need obtain in each of your subjects
- Have a plan in place to prepare for your examinations. This may be some sort of study plan that includes when to study which subject
- Concentre – focus on your set goals and avoid distractions
- Be careful with technology. Computers and the Internet are very useful tools in obtaining information; however, the marks you score in the exam depend main on what you actually write in the exam.
- Practise with exam questions and get a teacher to mark some of the work. Marking it yourself or having it marked by your peers is quite good but a find a way to get the teacher to mark some of the work and to correct parts is better
- Establish a routine for yourself before and during the exam time. This should include the number of hours you sleep and a study pattern that is regular and consistent
- Try and get used to drinking water more and not rely on sweet drinks to boost your energy levels, as water is a lot better for you and it usually the only drink allowed in the exam room
- If you have to seek extra tuition, be clear about what you want to get from it. You may perhaps need just to gain a better understanding of certain topics or it may be a whole module. Whatever you are taught practise with several past exam questions on those topics
- Avoid thinking you are overwhelmed. It is not helpful to procrastinate and to keep thinking that you do not know where to start. Start somewhere; anywhere at all as starting in the wrong direction can be fixed but non-starting cannot be fixed. Focus on one particular area or topic at a time and make sure you nail it before you move on.
- Have courage and don’t give up.
